Class 15 continues 1 Samuel 10-1 Kings 11: The United Kingdom
We looked at the good things David did, and the bad things he did. We spent a lot of time talking about David’s sexual sins and parenting failures, and how those planted the seeds for the dividing of the kingdom that is to come.
When David died, his farewell message in 1 Kings 2:1-10 was again a mixture of his good and bad.
When David turned the kingdom over to a new king, that king, Solomon, rode in on a donkey. When David turned the kingdom over to a new king, that king, Jesus, rode in on a donkey.
Solomon built the temple with around 183,850 workers over a seven year period, “according to the plan. (1 Chronicles 28:19)” There was a pattern for the Ark, for the tabernacle, for the ark of the covenant, and now for the temple. When we get to the New Testament we see the a pattern for the church. How did we get to the division we have today? By not following God’s pattern.
1 Kings 10 shows Solomon at his height of power, wisdom, and wealth
But….
1 Kings 11 opens with these words…
1 Kings 11:1-2 – “11 Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, …Solomon clung to these in love.”
Solomon knew the sin, pain, and trouble David had caused by living this way. Now Solomon will do it even bigger.
When Nehemiah came back years later to help rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, the Jews were still dealing with these problems. Nehemiah 13:23-26
What problems will be in your area and mine in 100 years because we caused them or we didn’t fix them?
Solomon allowed these women to turn his heart from God and adopt idols as the objects of his love. Solomon put the finishing touches on what would prove to be the end of the United Kingdom
